Batter, setback and wall facing explained

Batter is the lean of a wall back into the bank, and it is one of the reasons a gravity wall stands up. Expressed as a ratio, such as one horizontal to four vertical, or as the setback of each course behind the one below, batter moves the wall's centre of mass back toward the retained soil and reduces the overturning force on it. Crib walls are built at a pronounced batter set by the geometry of the units. Segmental systems build their setback into every course through pins or a rear lip, so the batter is automatic and consistent. Keymass and stacked rock walls are placed at a batter the engineer specifies. A reinforced core-filled block wall is the exception: it can stand vertical because its footing and steel do the work rather than its mass. The batter you see on a finished wall is not a style choice; it is part of the structure.

Why walls lean

Earth pushes outward on a wall. A wall that leans back moves its own weight over the soil it retains, so the push has to overcome more mass before the wall could tip. The steeper the wall, the more its stability relies on something other than its own weight: geogrid, steel or a footing.

Batter by system

Crib walls typically stand at a batter of around one in four to one in six, which is why they need room in plan. Keystone and Allan Block units set a smaller batter automatically, often around one in eight to one in twelve. Keymass and rock walls are battered to the engineer's design. Sleeper walls are usually near vertical and rely on their posts and footings. Reinforced block cantilevers are vertical.

What it means for the site

A battered wall occupies more ground at the base than at the top. On a tight boundary that can decide the system. On an estate batter it is invisible. The engineer and the survey resolve it early, which is one reason we ask for boundaries and levels before we recommend a system.

Questions we are asked

Can a crib wall be built vertical?
No. Its stability depends on the batter. Where a vertical wall is essential, a reinforced block cantilever is the answer.
Does batter affect the height limit?
Yes. A steeper wall needs more reinforcement or more mass to reach the same height. The engineer balances batter, section and reinforcement for the site.
